WILMINGTON, Del. – U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.), Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, released the following video statement today regarding today’s military parade celebrating the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary:
“Today, our nation celebrates the Army’s 250th birthday. My brother, my sister-in-law, my uncles, my father – all served honorably in the army, and I thank and respect our veterans for their service and support all who serve in the U.S. military.
“But this large, lavish, expensive parade in our nation’s capital also happens to be on the birthday of our president, and I’m reminded that the very beginnings of the U.S. Army were in a fight against a king – a fight for freedom.
“I think these dollars, frankly, could have been better spent supporting veterans, servicemembers, and Gold Star mothers, and I’m alarmed at the cuts to the Veterans Administration and to the support needed by our veterans and our Army.
“Frankly, this money could have been better spent, and I will never forget the service and sacrifice of the men and women of the United States Army.”
