August 11 is 811 Day — a timely reminder from Delmarva Power to always call 811 before digging. Striking underground utility lines can lead to service outages, serious injuries, and expensive repairs.

It’s easy to overlook what’s underground when you’re focused on what’s above it — a new mailbox, a backyard firepit or that perfect row of fall mums. But before you grab a shovel, we have one simple reminder: Call 811 first.

August 11, or 8/11 Day, is National Call Before You Dig Day, and it’s the perfect time to pause and think about what’s below the surface. Every year, underground utility lines are damaged by people digging without checking first. In 2024 alone, we responded to more than 300 incidents caused by unsafe digging — each one a risk to safety, service and infrastructure.

Why It Matters

Beneath your feet are thousands of miles of electric lines, gas pipelines, water mains and communication cables. Accidentally striking one of these lines can lead to serious injury, costly repairs and outages that affect entire neighborhoods.

The Good News? It’s Easy to Avoid.

Calling 811 connects you to Delmarva 811, the one-call notification center for Delaware and Maryland. Within a few days, professional locators will mark the approximate location of underground lines, so you know where it’s safe to dig.

Safe Digging Starts with These Simple Steps:

  • Call 811 at least three business days before you dig.
  • Wait for the marks — don’t start until all utilities have responded.
  • Respect the markings and dig with care.
  • Rethink your project if it’s too close to marked lines.
  • Double-check your contractor has made the call if you’ve hired help.

A Shared Responsibility

Whether you’re a homeowner, renter or contractor, safe digging is everyone’s responsibility – and it starts with one free, easy call.

Let’s keep our communities safe and connected, one project at a time.
