Wilmington, DE – Matt Meyer, a former teacher and small business owner, secured a decisive victory in tonight’s general election. With widespread support from Delawareans across the state, Meyer is set to make history as the first public school teacher to lead the state.
Addressing an enthusiastic crowd of supporters at The Chase Center, Meyer expressed deep gratitude to those who have championed his campaign and his vision for a Delaware that works for everyone.
“What an incredible night to be an American, to be from Delaware. And what an honor to speak on this historic night,” Meyer began. Reflecting on the journey of his campaign, he continued, “Ours is a campaign that under the old Delaware Way was given little chance of success. The insiders had chosen their candidate and were celebrating their path to more of the same. But then we – an extraordinary team from across our state – came together and engaged Delawareans in a discussion about our potential, about the opportunities and innovations that are possible.”
Meyer’s campaign centered on transparency, efficiency, and innovative solutions for Delaware’s most pressing challenges. He shared achievements from his time in county government, including initiatives to reduce housing insecurity, provide skills training for Delaware’s youth, and tackle complex social issues. “We created the Hope Center to address the growing and endemic problems of housing insecurity, mental illness, and drugs, established a kids coding program to prepare over a thousand Delaware children for the jobs of their future, and turned old dilapidated houses into renovated affordable homes,” Meyer said. “And we did that while running an efficient government, cutting county property taxes for the first time in over 50 years.”
Meyer also spoke passionately about his experiences as a teacher on Wilmington’s East Side, noting the challenges his students and their families faced and his commitment to a better future for all Delawareans. “I am only up here tonight because we have gotten things done,” Meyer emphasized. “Tonight cannot just be about promises. It must be about plans that we turn into progress, progress in every corner of our state.”
In an emotional moment, Meyer thanked his family for their unwavering support, paying special tribute to his wife, Dr. Lauren Meyer, who has juggled the demands of emergency medicine and raising three children. “How amazing is it going to be to have an emergency room doctor as our state’s First Lady?” he said, highlighting her dedication as a reminder of the impact of good policy.
Meyer concluded with a call to action, sharing a parable that has guided his approach to public service: “An old man asked, ‘If there was a reason to have faith, shouldn’t God have done something to help that person?’ The person of faith responded, ‘But he did do something. He created you – and gave you the chance to help.’”
“Thank you for having faith in our future and for believing that together we can build a Delaware that works for all of us,” Meyer said. “I am only here because you gave me that chance, and your next governor is going to be a teacher who will stand and deliver. Let’s get to work.”
