DOVER, DE – On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Senate Majority Caucus and Senate Minority Caucus leadership issued the below joint statement following the arrests of two former Millville Volunteer Fire Company members.
“We are outraged and deeply disturbed by the recent news regarding two former members of the Millville Volunteer Fire Company who have been arrested following a hate crime investigation. The reported actions that include racism and the use of a noose to intimidate a fire company employee are abhorrent and stand in stark contrast to the values we hold as Delawareans.
“Hate has no place in our firehouses, our communities, or anywhere in our state. The fire service exists to protect life and property without prejudice or bias. The behavior described in this case violates not only the law, but the trust and dignity that should define public service.
“We commend the Millville Volunteer Fire Company administration for addressing this situation and the Delaware State Police for their swift investigation. We are also grateful to the individual who had the courage to report the incident, ensuring these acts did not go unanswered.
“As leaders in the Delaware State Senate, we speak with one voice in condemning all acts of hatred, racism, and discrimination. We remain committed to fostering communities and institutions where every person, regardless of race, background, or identity, can live and serve in safety and dignity.”
The statement was issued by Senate President Pro Tempore Dave Sokola, Senate Majority Leader Bryan Townsend, Senate Majority Whip Elizabeth “Tizzy” Lockman, Senate Minority Leader Gerald Hocker, and Senate Minority Whip Brian Pettyjohn.
