Sussex Academy middle school administrators recognized September student leaders of the month Oct. 21 during a special breakfast ceremony that also welcomed pupils’ families.
Middle school Dean Dr. Rachael Johnston said the new recognition program aligns with the school’s participation in the nationally recognized Leader in Me initiative, which adapts author Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People as habits for students.
“September student leaders of the month were selected by their teachers for putting Habit 1: Be Proactive into action by making positive choices, taking ownership of their learning and setting a strong example for their peers,” she said.
Sixth graders Jea Gaston and Aubrey Wilson, seventh graders Cooper Lewis and Ava Gold, and eighth graders Anna Liang and Piper Graves received the inaugural awards.
Anna said she felt surprised and privileged to be one of the first students nominated for this award.
“I usually try my best to stay proactive by aiming to initiate my own actions, such as choosing to get work done early for more free time later, asking questions when I really need to, planning my time wisely, and taking responsibility for actions that I have done, positive or negative,” she said.
Being proactive means taking responsibility, showing initiative, focusing on what they can control, and choosing how to respond to challenges rather than simply reacting, Johnston said.
“We are proud of the leadership these students demonstrate each day and look forward to recognizing more student leaders throughout the school year,” Johnston said.
Following the recognition, students enjoyed breakfast with their families and school leaders.
